What Effect Are Active Shooter Drills Having on America’s Youth?

It’s insane that we need to teach kids how to hide from nuts with guns

Hide children. Hide from the bad man with the big gun who wants to kill you.

But wait, we are in school. Aren’t we safe here? This is our childhood. This is our innocence. Why are taking this away from us?

I mentioned my disgust at these “hide to save your life” drills this past summer at a barbecue and some people compared the drills to the ones kids used to go through back in the 1960s — the atomic bomb drills. While there might be a smidgen of similarity, the thing about an incoming bomb is that an enemy country fired it at us.

The problem with active shooters is that we are doing this to ourselves. We have given up and this is how we deal with an issue that is not just a problem but a national nightmare. Children have to go to school but zit-faced mentally disturbed 20-somethings don’t have to have free access to guns; free access to assault rifles.

95 percent of children in American public schools go through active shooter drills.

Everytown, a gun safety organization, has studied the effects of active shooter drills and finds them more harmful than good.

The past holds the answers to today’s problems. “Be curious, not judgmental,” at least until you have all the facts. Think and stop watching cable news.
