Trump administration now complicit in Russia’s systematic kidnapping of Ukrainian children.
46 children used to reside in this orphanage in Kherson. In November of 2022, the children were stolen by Russian occupying forces. The children were illegally taken to Russia and allegedly put with Russian families. Ranging in ages from as young as one to early teens, many of the children were housed in the orphanage not because they didn’t have parents but because, for an assortment of reasons, the parents were incapable of taking care of them.
When they could, the parents visited. Some parents visited each weekend and planned to remove their children from the home once their financial situation stabilized. Single mothers, sometimes working 80 hours a week, use government-sponsored homes to save for apartments. With no other family to help them, these women regard the homes the way travelers in the desert do an oasis. Other parents are recovering from illnesses and struggling with substance abuse, and still others have died, leaving the children alone.
I ran a program in the early 1990s that sponsored similar homes in St. Petersburg. The women who work in these places devote their lives to replacing the loss of familial stability…
