Vanishing Local Media Makes It Easier to Mold Minds and Elect George Santos

A thriving democracy needs checks at all levels

What does the election of George Santos and Putin’s fascist movement in Russia have in common? Both of these “communities,” one that happens to be the largest country in the world, lack a healthy and thriving local media resource.

Take the “buy local” movement, for example. Supporting local mom-and-pop shops is a good thing for communities and can brighten up the declining economic pictures of many small towns. When Main Street is thriving, towns seem to be happier. Being overlooked, however, in this movement, is the failure of locals to consume, or let’s say, “buy local media.”

The recently-elected MAGA-it from Long Island peddled to Long Island voters a list of lies that created a perfect candidate. It is almost as if Santos sat in his living room one weekend and after watching the Jimmy Stewart classic Mr. Smith Goes to Washington, put together a list of attributes that locals in his district wanted in a candidate.

Santos, who is Catholic, told voters that he is part Jewish and that his grandparents survived the Holocaust. There is a truth here. They did survive the Holocaust because they were living in Brazil at…
