Trump Stumps His Base, But the Not the Rest of Us

‘They are truly foreign languages, nobody even speaks them.’

Donald Trump really said a mouthful the other day on a visit to the Texas-Mexico border. While going on about how well he apparently did in stopping the flow of immigrants into the country, he informed the world that so many are coming now that “they are speaking languages no one even knows. They are really foreign.”

“Everybody I speak to says how horrible it is,” he said during an event at the border on Thursday. “Nobody [can] explain to me how allowing millions of people from places unknown, from countries unknown, who don’t speak languages — we have languages coming into our country, we have nobody that even speaks those languages. They are truly foreign languages. Nobody speaks them (About Those Immigrating Languages).”

Imagine the United States being characterized by xenophobia. The land of immigrants has long had an odd knee-jerk reaction to each new wave seeking shelter on our shores, but overall, America bemoans the new arrivals, adjusts, and accepts the new “foreign languages.” This constant influx of people has made America better than it would be otherwise.
