The Irony Is Classic: ‘Russians Don’t Surrender,’ the Soldier Yelled
At first, I didn’t want to write about this incident. It’s an entirely inconsequential one in the overall big picture of this war, but it happens countless times each day: soldiers dying. The last words spoken by the soldier on the right led me to write about this, however: “Russians don’t surrender.”
Immediately after he enthusiastically spoke those words, a drone blew up their speeding vehicle, and we can hear the muffled screaming, and then the video ends. It’s disturbing to watch, but because they are the invaders, and we know what they have been capable of, it’s hard to be sympathetic. The soldier on the right, who was doing filming, was making the video for his captain. A Ukrainian drone had taken out a truck on a bridge, and these guys were evacuating the injured fellow, the one on the left, back to a hospital.
Let me tell you a little something about these guys. I have met guys like the one filming countless times over my years in Russia. He’s poorly educated, as you can tell by how he speaks. He is also someone you should likely never trust. That is at least how I would have dealt with him in Russian society. He is the typical Russian soldier we hear about raping and…
