The world is watching January 6th, 2021 all over again, only it’s January 7th, 2023 and it’s not America but Brazil. Nevertheless, it’s like you feel after an evening of mixing red and white wine with beer, the hangover of Trumpism is proving more resilient than others.

Jair Bolsanaro was the the “Trump of Brazil.” His supporters are MAGA-its only they speak Portuguese and not dummy-American-English. They don’t pretend to be allies of poor Jesus but soccer fanatics.

Bolsonaro isn’t known as the Trump of the Tropics for no reason. Like his US counterpart, he is accused of badly botching the country’s covid-19 response, fanning a dangerous gun culture, and a disregard for climate change concerns — the destruction of the Amazon rainforest worsened under his term (Bolsanaro’s Rioting Supporters).

The right-wing Bolsonaro lost his election for president fair and square but while his team was cooperating with the incoming administration of President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (simply known as “Lula”), he refused to concede the election. In ways exactly reminiscent of Trump, he led his supporters to believe that the election has been fixed.

The past holds the answers to today’s problems. “Be curious, not judgmental,” at least until you have all the facts. Think and stop watching cable news.
