‘Send Them Back’
Trump gets Pennsylvania crowd to demand legal immigrants ‘leave America.’
In November 1883, Emma Lazarus penned a poem in which one line became an invitation to the world’s oppressed:
“Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free.”
On September 23, 2024, Donald Trump rescinded that invitation.
“The fact is — and I’ll say it now — you have to get them the hell out. You have to get them out. I’m sorry. Get them out. Can’t have it. … They’ve destroyed it (Get Them the Hell Out).”
These are two views of America, but they do not compete with each other. Donald Trump’s dystopian view is not America, and many of us will do whatever it takes to ensure our country never becomes that — a shithole, third-rate, authoritarian country like Russia, China, and Iran.
Springfield, Ohio, was thriving again thanks to the influx of legal Haitian immigrants. Like many Main Streets in America that had become economically dead and overrun with shuttered storefronts, Springfield, before Donald Trump’s cancerous energy struck, was the epitome of the American dream.
