Russia’s Suspension of New START Result of Army’s Chaos

With nothing else to show for his army, Putin kicks the tires on his nukes

With his conventional forces in a shambles overseen by the man seen walking here with him, Defense Minister Sergey Shoigu, Vladimir Putin has no choice but to modern his his nuclear arsenal and push it front and center.

If Russia had no nukes at all, it still might have invaded Ukraine but Western support would have been immediate and of an offensive nature a year ago and not last month. Russia’s army would have long ago been fertilizing the Ukrainian soil and Putin would be in some random, unmarked grave in Russia’s vast forest.

Russian President Vladimir Putin said he plans to deploy Sarmat intercontinental ballistic missiles, which are capable of carrying multiple nuclear warheads, as part of an effort to modernize the country’s nuclear forces.

The announcement, aimed in part at showcasing Russia’s nuclear arsenal, came two days after Mr. Putin said that Russia will pull back from the last remaining nuclear arms control treaty with the U.S. (Russia Plans to Deploy New Nuclear Missiles).
