Russia’s foreign minister, Sergei Lavrov, seems to be putting together a tape of his best hits for later submission to Saturday Night Live. During the “show,” an exclusive interview at the G-20 meeting in India, he had to stop and wait for the laughing in the audience to die down.

With a straight face, Lavrov said:

“The war, which we are trying to stop…which was launched against us…”

Pausing to let the laughter ripple through the crowd, Lavrov at the same time seemed a bit startled that people would actually react in such a way. Had he spoken those words in Russia, the brave Russians in the audience would have sat with stony faces nodding in silent agreement. Some more sycophantic ones might have even clapped.

It is always interesting to watch how the off-the-walls reality that Russia peddles gets met by sane, thinking people not forced to accept the lies and “fakes” Moscow sells to justify its war or genocide.

The narrative that Russia was being offended for two decades and so had to invade Ukraine to prevent the West from invading and dismembering it has been the newest one in the Kremlin’s attempt to find a balance…

The past holds the answers to today’s problems. “Be curious, not judgmental,” at least until you have all the facts. Think and stop watching cable news.
