From the town of Shebekino, you can walk to the border between Russia and Ukraine in 2 hours — if you are a refugee seeking solace and freedom from Russian fascism then it’s definitely a doable trek for most people.

The town of Shebekino is similar to many towns around Russia. It has a main street which is undoubtedly still called Lenin Street — Russians didn’t deny the Soviet Union’s father that honor — a police station, a pharmacy, maybe a cafe or two, and of course, one of the big chain grocery stores — probably a “Magnit.”

In terms of entertainment and culture, there will surely be a “DK,” which means “House of Culture,” that is now maybe a movie theater or hall that lists classes offered by locals for math tutoring, language instruction, and some cooking or yoga classes. If you are young, there is not much in the way of organized fun.

If you removed the town’s residents, 40,000 according to the 2020 census, and replaced them with 40,000 Ukrainians from just across the border, you wouldn’t notice much of a difference. In so many ways, Shebekino located just across the border in Russia, is similar to the typical Ukrainian town located in the middle of nowhere.

The past holds the answers to today’s problems. “Be curious, not judgmental,” at least until you have all the facts. Think and stop watching cable news.
