Russia Giddily Prepares to Take Over UN Security Council Presidency

The first line of the UN charter forbids Russia from being on the security council

WE THE PEOPLES OF THE UNITED NATIONS DETERMINED to save succeeding generations from the scourge of war, which twice in our lifetime has brought untold sorrow to mankind, and to reaffirm faith in fundamental human rights ((Charter of the United Nations).

On April 1st the civilized world, this means all countries on the record for opposing Russia’s war of genocide, has a choice to make: It can either let a pariah state that daily slaughters innocent Ukrainians take over the presidency of the UN Security Council; or, it can put its collective morals where its mouth is and block Russia’s accession to the month-long leadership position.

I am not making this up and this is not an April Fool’s day gag. The rolling presidency has returned to Russia — a country whose spot on the council has never been confirmed. Russia forced its way into the seat when it decided that it would assume the seat that formerly belonged to the Soviet Union.

The potential damage of a gavel-wielding Putin is hard to overstate. Even beyond its symbolic value; the Presidency of the U.N. Security Council carries very real institutional power within the…
