Soviet-era bombs proving too primitive to shoot down by Ukrainian air defenses
Russia’s “vaunted” military has been having some success lately. Let me correct that statement: The Soviet Union’s military has been having some success lately.
If you are thinking that I misspoke or maybe have just finally lost my mind, let me explain. Russia’s military, the one whose modernization absorbed tens of billions of dollars over the last decade and a half or so, has proven a paper tiger. On paper, it looks like it could be one of the most formidable armies in the history of the world, and yet it has proven to be an absolute laughingstock.
Now, along with the 1930s-era tanks Russia has been fielding, someone was cleaning out that big closet back behind the old Lenin statues and stumbled on a thousand or so Soviet-era, 1000-pound bombs.
Ukrainian and American officials say Russian warplanes are dropping Soviet-era bombs, some modified to glide long distances, which are almost impossible to shoot down (Russia’s Old Bombs).
