It sounds like this was a bug in the Medium code where it may have automatically un-paywalled it…

Oh, I agree with you 100%, Mike. Sadly, I don't expect they will. Like I said, I have never un-paywalled an article because I have never paywalled one...I just publish them, and by default they are all paywalled. Imagin me, taking time out of my day to reject earnings?! ))
