No, the Metaverse Is Not Going to (R)evolutionize How We Work

It sounds cool, right? The metaverse. It sounds even kind of smart; well, it did sound smart. Now, it kind of sounds like “I’ll fax it right over.” But wait, the metaverse didn’t have the moment the fax machine did, right? Why are we here then? And can we get out of the metaverse doldrums?

Maybe.

“So, what are you up to these days?”

“Ah, you know, building the metaverse.”

“The what-a-verse?”

Even after the big launch by Zuckerberg and the odd choice to rename his company, Meta, most people on this planet, which is located in the universe — also a cool concept — couldn’t tell you a thing about the metaverse.

Opinions are so varied as to what it is and what it might become that just saying the word in 2023 makes you kind of sound not-so-smart; or, at least risk being regarded as an anachronism because for all of the people who flocked to this thing in 2021, the really smart people with genuine vision as well as the hordes of carpetbagging generalists looking for a quick buck, the metaverse people themselves still have no complete understanding of why humankind should at…
