Musk, Wozniak Calling for a Pause in the Development of AI Platforms
Humans will be overcome by AI. Governments need to regulate it before it’s too late.
The Future of Life Institute, which is funded by the Musk Foundation, issued a letter that was signed by Musk, Steve Wozniak, Yoshua Benigo, and Steve Russel. This group, sometimes referred to as the “godfathers of AI,” joined their names with 1,000 other signees in calling for a 6-month pause in the launching of AI programs onto the market.
“AI systems with human-competitive intelligence can pose profound risks to society and humanity,” the letter warns. Powerful AI systems should be developed only once we are confident that their effects will be positive and their risks will be manageable (AI Development Should Be Paused).”
Ever since OpenAI’s GPT-4 chatbot was launched, there has been an arms race of sorts among AI developers as limitless resources are now being invested to do better and more with AI technology.
