Most of the Problems We Face Today Have Nothing to Do with Politics

And yet, the Right somehow makes them all about politics

People, like me, often complain that everything has become too politicized. No matter what the topic of discussion is, there will be a viewpoint that has been grasped hold of by someone and turned into a cause, a t-shirt, an avatar, or a reason to hate others.

Everything has been politicized for a reason.

Probably most of us here on Medium feel this way and that is why we are here. We seek answers. We seek a better understanding of why every conversation transforms into “discourse,” and loses the delightful amorphous quality of meaningless “small talk.”

And then it dawned on me when I was reading about how right-wing lunatics like Tucker Carlson and Sean Hannity accused Democrats of being “shamelessly political” for talking about climate change in the days before Hurricane Ian hit. Most of the stuff we are all fighting over has nothing to do with politics.

Most of the stuff that Fox News is making billions of dollars on has nothing at all to do with politics. Most of the stuff that liberals get so offended by and then refuse to talk to their parents, or anyone not within their immediate age cohort, has almost nothing to do with politics.

The past holds the answers to today’s problems. “Be curious, not judgmental,” at least until you have all the facts. Think and stop watching cable news.
