How Many Americans Will Be Shot this Independence Day?

The 4th is a day when bullets seem to have minds of their own

Let’s do something different this 4th of July. Forget about the number of people who will be killed or wounded. Let’s count how many bullets will be fired from guns tomorrow — just for the heck of it.

We are a nation that knows that innocent people will be slaughtered tomorrow simply for leaving their homes to attend barbecues, parades, firework displays, and just to buy some burgers or ice. We are a nation that doesn’t care that these people will be killed tomorrow. Maybe, and I know this is farfetched, we will begin to care about the bullets, though.

Poor little guy — look at him.

Why have I chosen the bullet? Because maybe it will be the suffering that this inanimate object, which gets destroyed when discharged from a gun, experiences that can finally find a place in the cold hearts of the Americans who are so head-over-heels in love with the other inanimate object, the gun. Gun people don’t mourn the senseless deaths of our fellow citizens. They just say stupid stuff like, “If only more people had guns…
