Only a fool would deny that there is an immigration problem at the borders of the U.S. But what is this problem and why does it exist?

In the terminology of the border patrol professionals, there are two kinds of encounters that concern them most: expulsions and apprehensions.

In the first one, the migrant is immediately expelled back to his home country which means there was no entrance at all into the U.S. The second one is when the migrant is apprehended, or detained at least temporarily.

In 2021 there were 1.6 million encounters, an increase from 400,000 during the fiscal year 2020. The drop in 2020 was due to COVID and not to Trump being president so Trumpists calm down. The last year of migration unaffected by COVID was 2019 and encounters were over 800,000.

Just like the increased demand for everything in the world post-COVID, so too the pent-up desire to migrate has probably been one of the main reasons there were so many encounters in 2021. In addition, the fact that Democrats are traditionally more humane than Republicans has also probably led to an increase and not because Biden is a bumbling fool as the Right would have us believe.
