Extremist Christian Right Demanding Hijab for Women

It can’t get more ridiculous than this but it is also something many of us have long expected. A Christian-inspired dress code for women just might be the fun-filled extremism that Democrats need to hold Congress.

The Christian Right, feeling energized after its June victory when abortion was overturned by SCOTUS, is boldly striding toward its ultimate goal: A Christian form of Sharia Law.

Now a far-right preacher known for his vile rants about the LGBTQ community is calling for men to burn their wives’ pants because he says, it’s just a form of cross-dressing (Targeting Women Who Wear Pants).

Pants, people. Pants.

A part of me wants to just laugh this off as yet another crackpot idea from a Jesus-hating Christian. Lucky enough to have found a whole congregation of crazy church-goers willing to donate to him each Sunday, Duncan Urbanek is known for preaching violence against LGBTQ groups. Surely, he is a far-far-right extremist unlikely to kick up a ripple of attention on our national lake.

But not in 2022. Not in an America that has suffered from “Trump Disease.” Few of us ever really believed that SCOTUS would have overturned Roe v. Wade. Few of us, just ten years ago, could have predicted the judicial activism that would leave the right to vote in such troubled waters in so many red states.

And yet, here we are. We are living through another summer with the threat of right-wing violence only this time they are targeting the F.B.I. and not Black Americans.

With a disconcerting laser-like focus on the female body, right-wing extremists want women to be pregnant and wear dresses. I certainly don’t doubt that soon enough they will also expect women to be out about shoe-less.

Thus, the larger philosophy behind hijab is one of maintaining dignity and purity and applies to all facets of life and not exclusively to dress. We must prevent ourselves from looking at the opposite sex in a lustful way, and we must dress so that we are regarded with respect (Why Do Muslims Have a Dress Code).
