Drones Used for Successful Pskov Airbase Attack Likely Launched from Russia

Kyiv’s aggressive new approach to bringing the war to Russia is a delight — for now

Ukraine recently launched its most successful drone attack on a Russian airfield in the Pskov Region, which lies close to St. Petersburg and the Estonian border. Russia’s official news source, RIA Novosti, reported that six planes were destroyed. Six is a lot — beers for the drone operator, who was sitting inside Russia not too far away from his target.

In the foreground of this photo, we see a neighborhood in Pskov, Russia, going through its nightly routine. The glow from TVs light up some windows; in other apartments, the gentle clinking of a stirring teaspoon against the cup’s sides echoes onto the stairwell of an otherwise wholly silent building. The rest of the residents blissfully sleep, some barely aware that their country is turning parts of Ukraine into a wasteland of metal and body parts.

What is interesting about this neighborhood is that it could be anywhere across the 11 time zones of Russia. It could be any village, town, city, or neighborhood. With a degree of certainty nearing 90 percent accuracy, I could tell what was going on beyond these windows. I can tell the smells…
