Let’s begin this article with facts that I am sure many people, especially those who vote Republican, do not know. Paul Whelan was born in Canada. He currently holds citizenship in Canada, the United States, and Ireland.
Paul Whelan served briefly in Iraq while in the Marines but was dishonorably discharged for bouncing checks and attempted theft of $10,000. Less than 1 percent of Marines get dishonorably discharged. Quite often, it is upgraded to “less than honorable” unless the Marines are really dissatisfied.
There is a lot that is not known about Whelan and his dealings in Moscow. Most media rather lazily called him a “corporate security executive” who , seemingly because of his profession, was arrested for espionage in Moscow.
I don’t doubt that Whelan was trying to do something along those lines but I am very skeptical that he was an established entity in Moscow corporate security circles. I get the sense he was a bit of a freelancer and maybe not dealing in the best circles. I have no information on that but it is a feeling.
