A Poem A Russian Solder Sent From Ukraine to a Friend
After a month on the front, this is what keeps him ‘warm’ at night
This Russian soldier, after having had some time to think about how he was sent off to war, and the way his family has treated him while there, settled upon this poem to express his feelings.
Is this how all Russian troops feel, I hope not. Although, given the poverty from which so many escaped, and the fact that the war is the only prospect for employment for many, some of the Russian boys and men dying on the front do feel this way.

The summons came from the recruiting office…I lie here and hear how my wife and mother-in-law are gleefully dividing up my belongings as if I had already been killed in battle…
My wife and mother-in-law are urging me to get to the military registration and enlistment office as soon as possible! They collect an old backpack for me and toss a loaf, a mug, and some dried noodles in it for me….
They offer me advice: Don’t foolishly think of surrendering! And don’t go missing! So that the corpse can be properly formalized! The stipends for the coffin and funeral will come to us! Seven million rubles is no joke!
